Community mural

After a two years of closure, Virginia Avenue Park re-opened on Saturday, November 12, 2005. Many people helped paint the community mural of Felix Escobar, by artist Peter Tigler, at the event. This mural was done in a "Paint by Numbers" method.

In honor of Officer Ricardo Crocker

On Thursday, the Santa Monica Police Department held a 'Dedication of the Memorial Wall,' Honoring Officer Ricardo Crocker, who died in the line of duty in Iraq. Crocker was a Santa Monica Police Officer from 1995-2005 and in the United State Marine Corps from 1989-2005. More than 200 law enforcement officers, and fellow Marines who served with Officer Crocker,  were present. Guest arrived from all over the country and from many parts of the world.

Plaque reads:
To the Police officers and firefighter who gave their lives in the line of duty to protect the citizens of Santa Monica. Crocker is the twelfth  name on the plaque.

Christening Ceremony

Over one hundred law enforcement personnel attended a christening ceremony at the Marina Del Ray on Tuesday November 8, 2005.  The new sheriffs rescue vessel was named in memory of deputy "Jerry" Ortiz who died in the line of duty on June 24, 2005 in the Marina Del Rey. Ortiz had served with the Los Angeles county sheriffs department for 15 years and was assigned to the anti gang unit. He is serviced by his wife Chela and sons Jeremy and Jacob.

LA County Sheriff Captain Mary Cambell , christens the rescue vessel "J. Ortiz" on Tuesday. This vessel is fully equipped for law enforcement, search and rescue efforts and fire fighting capabilities.
