National Hunger Awareness Day

On Tuesday June 6, 2006, National Hunger Awareness Day, students from Susanne Manheimer's graphic design class at the Art Institute of California-Los Angeles build a large-scale sculpture made entirely of canned food at the Westside Food bank. All the food used to build the sculpture will be donated to the Westside Food Bank. The can food was donated by Wild Oats. Westside food bank supplies food to 65 social service agencies with food assistance programs throughput Los Angeles

Venice shooting


Los Angeles police officers man a perimeter roadblock at Sixth Street and Venice Boulevard in the hours following a fatal shooting that occurred around 3 p.m. on June 5, 2006 in the faculty parking lot at Venice High School. according to the LAPD, a 17-year-old Hispanic male was shot in the chest and taken to a local hospital, where he died. Police received a tip that the suspect was near Oakwood and California avenue, and had a possible detainee. The suspect was not found. The victim was later identified as Augustine Contreras, a Junior from Venice High School.
