Zehra Karim, 19, a Vikings Inn clerk, sells merchandise during the store’s busiest day of the year at Santa Monica High School on Friday, August 25, 2006. The Vikings Inn was expected to sell $14,000 in merchandise. The store sells, shirts, hats, sweat pants and tops, locks, school supplies, and more. The store is operated by project ECHO, an entrepreneurial student group which recently won an international award in China for its business plan.

Kiran Ahluwalia performs at the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday, August 24, 2006 as part of the summer-long Twilight Dance Series. Ahluwalia is an Indo-Canadian singer who has devoted much of her life to learning the art of Indian vocal music and in particular ghazal, a poetic song form that arrived in India since the fourteenth century. Next Thursday will conclude the summer-long Twilight Dance Series with a performance by the David Grisman Quintet.

PAL youth shoppers browse for merchandise during the 'PAL Good Deed Dollar' shopping spree on Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the Santa Monica Police Activities League. The PAL kids earned  good deed dollars throughout the summer for good behavior and for doing chores. The end-of-summer sale was a one-day event in which youth could spend their hard-earned cash on everything from school supplies and remote control cars, to jewelry, sweatshirts — even a portable DVD player and an iPod Nano.
