Second night of Chanukah

 On Monday, Rabbis  Isac Levitansky (right) and Yossi Wolosow, from the Chabad House, light up the menorah atop of  the Police sub station located at the Santa Monica Pier. This celebrates the second night of Chanukah.

Tsunami memorial

Buddhist monks from the Los Angeles area, Bhante Chao Chu (right) and Ahangama Dharmara  throw  a flower in to the ocean during the Sri Lanka foundation's  candlelight vigil that was held at the end of the Santa Monica pier on Monday. This event was held in remembrance of the life's lost in the tsunami a year ago today.

Kelly Bolton, Staff at the Santa Monica Skate Park on Olympic an 14th, performs a "Flair" (180 back flip) on his BMX bike. Skate park is open to bikes on Thursdays from 3pm-5pm and Sundays from 11am to 1pm. At those times , no skate-boarders are allowed in to the park, only bikes.

Raising the roof

The roof is installed on the Ashes & Snow art exhibit, which opens Jan. 14 at the 1550 beach parking lot north of the Santa Monica Pier. The nomadic museum consists of a temporary display of 152 shipping containers that will house more than 100 large-scale photographic works of wildlife and an accompanying 35-millimeter film.

Shipping out

John Sutherland on Monday addresses a holiday package intended for his younger brother, a Navy reserve stationed in Kuwait. Lines were long most of the day at the post office on Fifth Street. Monday was the busiest mailing day of the year, according to the United States Postal Service. The postal service will deliver 20 billion cards, letters and packages this holiday season. The postal service estimates that 1.6 billion cards, letters and packages were sent on Monday, compared to a national daily average of 670 million. Wednesday is expected to be the busiest delivery day.
