Off to Zuma

More than 280 applicants wait in line to register for the lifeguard tryouts on Saturday and win a spot in the 2008 Los Angeles County Lifeguard Training Academy. The Open Ocean 1,000-meter swim test was scheduled to be staged at the Santa Monica Pier but was moved to Zuma beach because of the storm drain water run-off caused by yesterdays rain.

1) SAMO High Sophomore, Jivanto Van Hemert, 14, serves the Chief of Police, Timothy J. Jackman and Captain Wendell Shirley, Rosemary Chicken during the Santa Monica Police Activities League's 5th Annual ChezPAL at Back on Broadway on Thursday. The fundraising event was prepared and served by the youth from PAL under the supervision of well-known restaurateur Fred Deni. 2) PAL youths are put up for auction for various services such as baby sitting, pet sitting and car washing during the fundraising event.

The worlds largest ecology flag flies high above Southern California Disposal and Recycling, a family run Santa Monica based trash collection and recycling company, on Thursday, September 20, 2007.  The giant flag is three stories tall and five stories wide (30x50 feet) and is flying from a 100-foot tall flag tower within feets of the 10 Freeway where 348,000 vehicles pass per day (according to Caltrans records).
