HEAT WAVE: A group of kids beat the summertime heat at Virginia Avenue Park on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, by getting soaked. The park recently went through a $13 million renovation and expansion.

The Santa Monica Fire Department, family, and friends gathered on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at the Santa Monica Public Safety Building to pay tribute to Fire Capt. Daniel M. Bendiksen. SMFD Captains Scott Ziegert and Mike McKean unveil the Wall of Honor displaying the 14th hero immortalized on the Wall of Honor. Bendiksen, who served from 1974 to 2001, died in March of 2003. SMPD Fire Chief, Jim Hone, presided over the ceremony.

Butts, Jr, the winning item from the live auction during the fourth annual "Chez PAL" event at Back on Broadway on Thursday, July 20, 2006. Chief Butts won four tickets to Pacific Park during the live auction  with a $75.00 bid. All proceeds from Chez Pal benefits Santa Monica PAL. The restaurant was taken over by Santa Monica PAL kids, serving and preparing delectable dinners under the supervision of well-known restaurateur Fred Deni. Sitting next to Chief Butts are his two Captains; Mark Smiley and Wendell Shirley.

Soul, gospel and blues legend Mavis Staples, performs on the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday night, July 20, 2006 as part of the summer-long Twilight Dance Series. Mavis Staples is a 40-year-plus veteran of the music scene - a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and one of VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll. She has appeared with everyone from the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Bill Cosby, Presidents Kennedy, Carter, and Clinton, to Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Santana, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and many others.
