Early Bird Dinner

Using his long beak, a Sandpiper digs for sand crabs along the Santa Monica shoreline at dusk on Monday, November 17, 2008. Sandpiper, common name for some members of the large family Scolopacidae, small shore birds that eat small invertebrates picked out of the mud or soil. Different lengths of bills enable different species to feed in the same habitat, particularly on the coast, without direct competition for food.

It's a wrap

Community leaders, volunteers from the Police Activities League (PAL), Bayside District Corporation and Santa Monica Place, wrapped more than 250 gifts which were collected during the Winterlit “Best Gift Ever” community gift drive. Gifts collected will be distributed this Saturday at PAL to children who might otherwise go without presents this holiday season.

Santa Monica Nativity Scene

Hunter T. Jameson, Chairman of the Santa Monica Nativity Scene, examines Simeon in Light House church's scene 'Presentation in the Temple' at Palisades Park, on Saturday, December 13, 2008. The Santa Monica Nativity Scenes is an annual display of the Christmas story which has been staged at Palisades Park since 1953. The interdenominational display stretches along Ocean Avenue from Arizona Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard and includes 14 scenes with life-size figures depicting events surrounding Christ’s birth.
