Saving Lives with Hands-Only CPR

In honor of National CPR Week, Santa Monica Police Harbor Patrol Officers teach Hands-Only CPR at Santa Monica Pier on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths. It involves two easy steps: Call 911 and push hard and fast on the center of the chest. Don't stop until help or an AED arrives. Anyone can perform Hands-Only CPR and everyone should perform it if they aren't confident in their CPR skills or haven't learned conventional CPR. Hands-Only CPR is easy to remember and results in delivery of more, uninterrupted chest compressions until more advanced care arrives on the scene. Bystanders must take action when they see someone suddenly collapse and stop breathing normally. When effective bystander CPR is given immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, it can double or triple a victim's chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR can help save lives. Do not give Hands-Only CPR to infants and children -- all infants and children who have a sudden cardiac arrest need conventional CPR. Adults who nearly-drown or have cardiac arrest due to a respiratory cause need conventional CPR.

Pedal on the Pier

More than a five hundred cyclist spin at the Santa Monica Pier during the annual Pedal on the Pier spin-a-thon on Sunday, June 5, 2022. Pedal on the Pier is a 4-hour spin-a-thon that raises money for the Harold Robinson Foundation/Camp Ubuntu. HRF works with kids and schools in our underserved communities by providing them with camp-based programming which is designed to strengthen confidence and independence, build character and develop leadership skills. Opera at the Beach: Aida

The season opener of LA Opera's Aida is being transmitted live in high-definition video from nine cameras at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Through the generous support of Los Angeles County and Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, LA Opera is able to present this simulcasts free of charge as a special gift to the community. Aida marks the sixth simulcast to the Santa Monica Pier. “These simulcasts make it easier for County residents to get a taste of wonderful opera," said Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who represents the Third District where the Santa Monica Pier is located. Save the Children’s '100 Days of Reading' Campaign to Keep Kids Reading, Learning all Summer Long kicked-off at Santa Monica Beach on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Today, Save the Children is launching its annual summer reading campaign in the United States, 100 Days of Reading, to give children fun ways to keep reading and learning this summer, while also helping provide support and resources to rural America’s most vulnerable kids during this critical time.

Starting today until September 8, International Literacy Day, Save the Children will be sharing tips and activities on its Instagram (@savethechildren) and at SavetheChildren.org/READ to help ensure kids continue engaging in reading and stay active all summer long. In addition to offering activities, 100 Days of Reading will help feed the minds and bellies of children growing up across rural America. Every link that is clicked or tapped by participants will help unlock donations of books, educational materials and healthy food for 750,000 kids living in some of America’s most impoverished, rural communities – where Save the Children is working every day to ensure children are getting the early learning and educational support they need to be successful in school and life.
