Arts Leadership Awards

The Santa Monica Arts Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing civic engagement and support of the City’s arts and cultural community. The Foundation believes that the arts and culture are integral to civic life and are what make Santa Monica vital, exceptional, and economically competitive.

Wayne Blank — Creative Community Innovator. An individual or small or mid-size commercial creative business contributing to making Santa Monica’s arts and culture sector ‘cutting edge’ through experimentation, design, or cultural sustainability.
Abby Sher — Arts Patron. An individual or business leader providing extensive support for the arts in Santa Monica.
Jon Swihart — Artist in the Community/Bruria Finkel Award. An artist who has contributed significantly to Santa Monica’s arts community through activism, patronage, and/or volunteerism.
Also honored was artist Bruria Finkel in recognition for her lifetime of leadership in making Santa Monica a place that values artists and the arts. The Artist in the Community award was named in her honor.
“Volunteers, philanthropists, and creative entrepreneurs are essential to Santa Monica’s extraordinary arts community,” said George Minardos, Foundation Chairperson, “and these awards highlight the importance of their contributions.”
Honorees of the nonmonetary award received a signed lithograph by artist Lita Albuquerque, a widely renowned artist Santa Monica artist. Assemblymember Richard Bloom, representing the 50th Assembly District, also presented the honorees with State Certificates of Recognition expanding the reach of the award from city to state level.
The Arts Leadership Awards program was launched this past November by the Santa Monica Arts Foundation to celebrate leadership and recognize the breadth of efforts that support Santa Monica’s artistic, creative, and cultural community. A selection committee of Santa Monica Arts Foundation board members and representatives of the local arts and business communities met in December to review nominations and make the final selections based on the award guidelines.
The Arts Leadership Awards is a program of the Santa Monica Arts Foundation. The Foundation is a 501c3 organization established to assist in developing support for the arts in Santa Monica. It serves as the non-profit arm of the City’s Arts Commission and Cultural Affairs Division. The Foundation also provides support for Glow, which is one of the largest public art events in the U.S. Glow 2013 will take place Saturday, September 28th, 7:00 p.m.–3:00 a.m.

Bike Parking Grand Opening
Santa Monica College Cheerleaders lead a bicycle parade during the Bike Parking Grand Opening Ceremony at SMC on Thursday, February 28, 2013. Responding to a significant increase in bicycle ridership by SMC students and employees, the college has built a new $600,000 bike parking lot with 400 spaces, bringing the campus total to 710 spaces. (The lot also has secure racks for skateboards.) The facility, on three-quarters of an acre, is notably secure, with bright lighting, security cameras and emergency phones – and it is located across the street from the Campus Police office. Funded by Measure AA, the 2008 Santa Monica-Malibu bond measure, the new bike parking lot took six months to complete.The new bike parking lot opened to students and employees the first day of the spring semester, Feb. 11, but the ceremony was held today.

FOOD TRUCK BAZAAR

Highlights from the new “Food Truck Bazaar" at the California Heritage Museum on Tuesday February 26, 2013. Ten food trucks, each hosting a different type of cuisine were featured as well as merchants presenting various items such as antique and contemporary jewelry, children’s clothes and toys, yoga and gym clothing, knitted scarves, sculptures from Bali, photographs representing Santa Monica, real estate information on Santa Monica and Venice properties, snow boards and surf boards. The evening event will be held every tuesday night from 5:30 p.m. through 9:30 p.m. at 2612 Main Street, on the corner of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard, in Santa Monica. The Victorian Restaurant is open so that guests that purchase from the food trucks can eat their dinner in the outdoor patio, the indoor first floor bar or the downstairs Basement bar. There is no charge for using the Victorian’s facilities. Parking is available within the museum’s lot. Additionally, visitors to the museum event can find parking in adjacent "quarter metered" parking lots. SMFD Live Burn Training Exercise

The Santa Monica Fire Department conducts a live burn training exercise at 430 Colorado Avenue on Sunday, February 24, 2013.
This building is slated to be demolished to accommodate the new EXPO/Metro light rail terminus station.
The three day live fire training will task Santa Monica Firefighters with realistic fire scenarios to hone their fire suppression strategies, tactics, and command functions and skills.
This training opportunity has been made possible by the collaborative efforts of EXPO/Metro line, Skanska, and Penhall companies working with the City of Santa Monica Building and Safety Department, City Attorney’s office, and the local AQMD office staff.
